Adverse water conditions following torrential rain saw the season final Disabled Surfers event, scheduled for April 6 at Umina Beach, cancelled for safety reasons, with the organisation now looking forward to its 20th season next Summer.

Disabled Surfers Association Central Coast (DSACC) President Rae Fiechter recently visited two major local sponsors to present a gift, expressing gratitude for the support shown to the branch.

The personalised macrame gifts were made by two of the volunteers using surfboard fins, driftwood and shells with engraving provided by Terrigal Men’s Shed.

“Rosemarie Mondal from Bakers Delight, Umina Beach, has supplied bread for our post-event barbecue since we relocated two events to Umina Beach in 2017,” Fiechter said.

“All four events are now at Umina and Rosemarie has continued her sponsorship as our events grow in size.

“Kim Cole, Tourism and Community Manager at Ettalong Diggers Club, has assisted with in-kind grants to supply sausages and onions for the past two seasons, increasing quantities as our attendee numbers grew.

“We acknowledge club staff for their work in preparation and supply.

“These wonderful donations allow DSACC to provide free events for our surfers, their carers and our volunteers.

“We look forward to our 20th season next Summer with the continued support of these wonderful sponsors.”

DSACC is a volunteer-run organisation that enables people of all ages and abilities to take part in one of Australia’s most popular pastimes, beach surfing.

Volunteers provide a safe, and happy surfing experience to a wide range of people with various disabilities who would otherwise be unable to access the beach.

The DSA was established in 1986 and currently has 19 branches across Australia and New Zealand.

The association sets world’s best practice for the sport of disabled surfing.
