More than 1,000 community members gathered at Wamberal Beach on September 10 for a Line In The Sand protest organised by the Wamberal Beach Save Our Sand (SOS) group.
The gathering was in protest of the proposal to introduce a seawall at the beach to solve ongoing erosion problems.
An SOS spokesperson said the protest follows two years of ongoing campaigning from Wamberal the group, which has attracted more than 2,300 signatures on a petition and acquired 4,000 group members opposed to the seawall.
The group has previously stated that it would like to see other options including sand nourishment, planned retreat, groynes, artificial reefs and dune revegetation investigated fully.
“The protest was also about drawing attention to the DA system being an ineffective mechanism for erosion response,” the spokesperson said.
“It bypasses key consultation, studies and reports that are essential to ensuring the best possible outcome for the beach, community and homeowners.
“The protest was about trying to see the response changed.
“It’s also important to note that, come the March election, this issue is going to be at the forefront of voters’ minds; we hope (the protest) makes that clear to Member for Terrigal, Adam Crouch.”
The spokesperson said the protest was about drawing a “line in the sand,” and telling Central Coast Council and the State Government that “enough is enough”.
“Since the start, our voices have been silenced and our opinions ignored,” the spokesperson said.
“We want to have a say about our beach and are not allowed.
“(The protest) is all about the Wamberal community getting a say in the future of their beach.”
