Fostering cultural connection through song

Mitch Tambo at Budgewoi Primary School

Australian World Music star Mitch Tambo visited Budgewoi Primary School and Avoca Pre-school recently as part of his Walanbaa Youth Tour.

Throughout the tour, Tambo will visit schools, learning centres and youth hubs, delivering high energy performances and impactful workshops tailored for both students and educators alike.

His mission is to inspire, educate and empower through the universal language of music and storytelling.

With a repertoire of award-winning music, and captivating storytelling sessions, he will engage thousands of young minds, fostering themes of belonging, identity, healing and cultural connection.

Moreover, he will engage educators in crucial discussions surrounding these vital issues, aiming to shape the perspectives of future leaders.

The tour, which kicked off in mid-March, will see Tambo perform at more than 100 dates across multiple states, including NSW, Victoria, Queensland, ACT, and WA.

“The response has been phenomenal considering this is important work,” he said.

“It’s heartening to see schools eagerly embracing this initiative.

“To effect real change in future generations, we need to challenge existing mindsets and foster cultural awareness from a young age.”

The performances feature songs sung in Gamilaraay language and unforgettable didgeridoo renditions, encouraging active participation from students who revel in learning about Aboriginal culture.

“The kids have such a fun time, they are so pumped dancing and singing along to the songs, it’s a really joyful atmosphere,” Tambo said.

“Meanwhile, teachers have lauded the tour, with some moved to tears during developmental sessions.”

Drawing from his experience as a social worker, the proud Gamilaraay man creates a safe space for open dialogue, sharing personal anecdotes and leading Yarning Circle sessions to facilitate meaningful conversations.

“I’m very open about sharing challenges I’ve had in the past and talk about how I got to where I am today – a music artist and proud man with a wife and kids,” he said.

“I always say that my visits are safe spaces for important conversations.”

Hailed as Australia’s most distinctive First Nations entertainer, Tambo has earned global acclaim for his body of work.

This includes 10 consecutive Top 10 singles on the Australian iTunes Worldwide charts, as well as charts across the world.

He has performed at events such as the Australian Open, T20, NRL Indigenous All Stars and at the historic Fire Fight Australia Concert.

His advocacy for social causes has garnered widespread recognition.
