Ocean Beach Surf Lifesaving Club is calling on Central Coast locals to sign up and jump on a rowing machine as part a 24-Hour Row For Mental Fitness fundraiser being held at the club from midday Saturday, September 9, to midday Sunday, September 10.

During the event – organised by the Gotcha4Life Foundation, which is aimed at helping build mental fitness in communities across the country – teams will keep their ergs (rowers) rowing non-stop for 24 hours.

Ocean Beach Surf Lifesaving Club is actively seeking teams of six people to sign up and row on an erg (an ergometer is a machine rowers use to simulate rowing without an actual boat) for 15-minute blocks in support of the event.

2023 represents the club’s first ever participation in the 24-Hour Row for Mental Fitness, which is now in its sixth year.

The event originated from Avalon SLSC following a number of tragic suicides in the area.

Ocean Beach Surf Life Saving Club president Scott Hannell said the 24-hour row was a way of getting the community together to make a real difference in the community’s mental health.

“What’s most important to us is coming together as a community to help change the game for mental fitness,” he said.

“From a club and community perspective it’s fantastic to be getting behind this worthwhile event to help bring in some solid funds.

“It’s our club’s first year taking part and we’re pleased to report that we’ve already seen funds raised past the $1,000 mark.

“We’re off to a great start, and we’d love members of the community to sign up, and have a go so we can keep building from there.

“We’re encouraging people to sign up on the 24-Hour Row website or they can contact me directly to get on an erg, or donate in support of the 24 Hour Row.

“Every dollar raised makes a difference and every $40 raised funds one person to do a mental fitness workshop.”

Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch is encouraging locals to get down and support the cause.

“I’ll be getting down there on the weekend to show my support and have some fun too, while highlighting the importance of mental fitness,” she said.
