Ben’s brave act leads to heartache

Ben and Cassie Terry with their children, Michael, Evie and James

Ben and Cassie Terry, along with their three children, had just moved into their first home together at Chain Valley Bay when a fire broke out in their back neighbour’s property in July.

When Ben Terry saw the smoke, he didn’t think twice, grabbing a fire extinguisher and rushing to do what he could.

Together he and his neighbour managed to get the fire under control before Terry remembered he had another extinguisher in his shed.

In jumping the back fence into his own property, Terry landed terribly, and while he still managed to get the extinguisher, he could not get back over the fence.

“He crawled to the fence and threw it over,” Terry’s sister-in-law Amanda Lyons said.

“He realised he had done a lot of damage, a really good job on his leg.”

The diesel mechanic broke his tibia from the knee down and underwent extensive surgery on July 25.

His knee will also need surgery but will need to wait until the bone has healed.

“He will be off work for some time, and it’s not going to be a quick recovery,” Lyons said.

“They are both the type that will do anything to help other people but won’t accept help themselves.

“He is genuinely a top bloke.”

Lyons has set up a go fund me page to help out the family and is hoping to raise $8,000.

“They only got married in December and had just moved into their first house together two weeks before the fire,” she said.

“He is an unsung hero.

“I would really be happy to get $8,000 to give them some breathing space and to help with the mortgage while he recovers.”
