A young woman’s reflections on being a candidate in the recent elections

Emily McCallum

Emily McCallum, candidate for Gosford, for the Animal Justice Party (AJP) writes about her experience running in the recent State election:

Being a first time candidate, I have learnt so much from this election journey and it’s been an honour to represent Animal Justice Party on core values I care so much about. I have met so many important people who share the same concerns on issues we have locally and for the state.

Working with Independent Lisa Bellamy, Coast Environment Alliance, and having conversations with constituents, it is evident our community is very concerned about local development proposals and their impacts on our land.

Many people feel like their voice is not being heard by our Council and State members on a number of issues.

To me, it is upsetting and quite disrespectful how our community feels ignored on some important issues that matter to them, such as environmental protection.

After creating an alliance with Sustainable Australia Party and an independent committed to taking action on saving the Sacred Lands in Kariong, we realised how powerful the non major parties are when it comes to representing the community. The current combined election results (show) our electorate cares for our environment, animals and local history.

While campaigning for this election is over, I am so grateful for every lesson and connection it has brought me and this marks the beginning of many endeavours for (me) in our area.

(AJP) will continue to represent Central Coast community members, the environment and animals that call this (region) home and ensure our locals are supported in raising issues with State members, until they feel heard.

We hope to see the introduction of more positive initiatives people agree to, like Veticare, more safe and effective shark mitigation and better rental rights for pet owners.

I will continue to advocate for less harmful and wasteful allocation of funds, more sustainable proposal plans, and for a better future for the Central Coast.
