Roving Rubies tip a red hat to Dame Edna

Marlene Klintworth, who is Queen Lilimarlene of the Roving Rubies Red Hat Society of the Central Coast, has paid tribute to the late Barry Humphries and his best know character, Dame Edna Everage.

“We tip our hat to Dame Edna, an icon for me,” she said.

“I have carried the tradition of ‘the badge, Madge’ which Humphries used on his TV show.

“No matter how famous his guest was, he asked his bridesmaid Madge for a name tag to put on the guest.

“I loved it, so am still continuing the tradition of badging the ladies and there’s a special red handbag used as a ‘fine box’ for when they’re not wearing their name tag.

“Many have commented on a photo taken of me with Dame Edna at the Waxworks in Sydney many years ago.

“It was a marvellous piece of art – I wonder what happened to the life size statue?”

With members aged from their 50s into their 90s, the Roving Rubies meet regularly for company, new friendships and outings.

“We are continuing to gather more new members although it has been slow urging ladies to get out of the house and enjoy life again with us (post COVID),” Klintworth said.
