Great grandmother turns 101

Joyce Tee turns 101

Vera Joyce Tee (Nash) of Umina Beach celebrated her 101st birthday surrounded by family and friends on December 7.

Born in Canowindra NSW in 1919, Joyce, as she prefers to be called, grew up on a farm, and was the youngest daughter, and the middle of nine children.

She said she was the last of her siblings left, but almost all nine of them had reached the age of 90, and another sister had reached 100.

Joyce moved to Umina Beach with her husband Reg in 1964 to provide two of their four children with an opportunity of a career.

She said compared to the ‘60s, Umina Beach had changed a lot, particularly on their street, which at the time had only four houses.

Sadly, Joyce and Reg lost their son Colin in 1980, and Reg passed away in 1993.

Joyce is surrounded by a large loving family, daughter Zoane, sons Frank and Don, as well as six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Don said Joyce was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to her whole family.

Daughter-in-law, Susan Tee, said Joyce was a stalwart of the Ettalong Uniting Church and had attended Sunday morning services regularly, until COVID-19 restrictions were put in place.

“She thanks all those around her who have helped to get her to this amazing milestone,” Tee said.

“Dr Michael Crookes, her local GP; her good friend Robin; Anne and Sharon from Legacy for their never-ending support, girls from Kincare who come daily to look after her; her family and her faith in God.

“Joyce still lives in her own home and is bright as a button.

“She still cooks and enjoys shopping but absolutely loves having friends and family come visit.”

When asked what the secret to living a long, healthy, and happy life was, Joyce had some important words of wisdom.

“Don’t smoke, don’t drink, eat well, and go to church,” she said.
