Brett and Anna Newcombe, founders of Mercy & Grace Ministries, have received a Pride of Workmanship Award from Rotary Brisbane Water, recognising their exceptional service in food distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In response to the growing food insecurity caused by pandemic-related economic hardships, Mercy & Grace Ministries was created with a clear mission: to combat hunger while building community connections.
The Newcombes successfully co-ordinated volunteers and secured food donations from local businesses, becoming an essential resource for vulnerable families.
Immediate Past President of Rotary Brisbane Water Mitchell Gordon said the couple’s commitment to serving others perfectly embodied the Rotary principle of Service Above Self.
“Their unwavering dedication has not only provided meals to countless families but has also motivated others to contribute to our community’s wellbeing,” he said.
The ministry has evolved since its founding, distributing thousands of meals while expanding to offer educational opportunities and temporary accommodation for people experiencing homelessness.
Their efforts have generated recognition both for their significant impact and their innovative community engagement approach through strategic partnerships and volunteer opportunities.
“We feel honoured to receive this award,” Anna Newcombe said.
“It represents the collective effort of our dedicated team and the incredible generosity of our community.
“We’re facing these challenging times together, and seeing our work make a tangible difference is deeply fulfilling.”
The Newcombes’ grassroots initiative highlights the vital role of community-based efforts in times of crises, exemplifying how compassion and collaboration can offer hope to those in need.
