As the long weekend approaches, police are issuing a blunt warning to drivers: obey the rules or face the consequences.
Speaking at a press conference the day before Anzac Day, Assistant Commissioner McKenna made it clear that police won’t tolerate reckless behaviour on the roads or at public events.
“If you’re not tolerant, you’ll find yourself in handcuffs, locked up in the back of a police truck, he said.
“Double demerits are in force, and our focus is firmly on traffic and road safety.

McKenna stressed that serious accidents come down to poor decision-making.
“We say this every time: it’s your choices behind the wheel that can cost lives. Take your time, don’t speed, don’t drink and drive, and take breaks when you need them.
With high traffic volumes expected, police will be out in force across the state.
“There’ll be a lot of people on the roads, and we’ll be one of them.
“If you’re caught speeding, drink-driving, or breaking the law, you won’t be getting to your destination. You’ll be on the side of the road, possibly without a license.
His message was clear: “Get home safely. There are families waiting for you, sons, daughters, mums, dads.
“Don’t let one bad decision change everything.
