Kids pitch in to help less fortunate

The children helped sort toys for distribution this Christmas

Central Coast children have pitched in to help local charity We Care Connect begin preparing toy packages for those less fortunate this Christmas.

On Sunday, September 20, the charity held its first “kids sorting session”, gratefully receiving the help of nine children and teenagers who sorted through dozens of boxes of donated toys so they can be bundled into gifts and given to children who are living in poverty on the Central Coast.

We Care Connect Secretary Jackie Klarkowski said it was wonderful to see young people from the community giving up their Sunday morning for a good cause.

“We hold a Sunday sorting session once a month, where adults who are busy during the week volunteer their time to help, but this was the first time children had come along, and they were fantastic,” she said.

“They were the perfect people for the job as they knew exactly what all the toys were, and which age group would like which toys.”

The sorting session marked the beginning of the charity’s Christmas preparations, with a goal to provide gifts to 2,000 local children in December.

“This year has been very tough, financially, for a lot of people and when you’re struggling to keep a roof over your family’s head, extra things like presents are the first to go,” Klarkowski said.

While all gifts are gratefully received, the charity is particularly appealing for donations of gifts for the 12-18 age group.

“We provide support for children and teenagers all the way up to 18 and it’s the teenage group where we usually find we are short on supplies,” Klarkowski said.

Community members wishing to contribute to the We Care Connect Christmas appeal can find a full list of drop off locations on its website.

We Care Connect is a Central Coast and Newcastle charity founded in 2016 by a small group of volunteers who believe no child should be disadvantaged because of poverty.

Since then, the charity has helped more than 16,000 local children by re-homing quality pre-loved essentials.

The organisation is powered by more than 130 passionate volunteers.
