The Phoenix Collective Quarter (PCQ) will play at Kincumber Anglican Church at 2pm on Sunday, April 16, with a program featuring the music of Hungarian patriot Zoltán Kodály and Peter Sculthorpe – long recognised as one of the founders of modern Australian composition.

In his String Quartet no 1, Kodály broke away from the tradition of German Romanticism, instead using Hungarian folk melodies as inspiration.

On the other side of the world, Sculthorpe’s String Quartet no 11, subtitled Jabiru Dreaming, is a dreamily evocative exploration of the sounds of the Australian landscape.

The final piece on the program, David Balakrishnan’s Skylife is a contemporary jazz fusion work exploring concepts of the American vernacular.

PCQ will take the audience on a journey of discovery, explaining the works and comparing and contrasting their features and compositional styles in the context of their times.

Launched by Charmian Gadd at the Crossroads Festival, The Phoenix Collective Quartet is a premier string quartet performing concerts in Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle, the Central Coast and regional NSW.

Its members come from the ranks of national and international orchestras such as Opera Australia Orchestra, Canberra Symphony, Sydney Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, Kammer Philharmonie Köln, Boston Symphony and Academy of St Martin in the Fields.
