ANZAC Day service at Empire Bay

Last year's ANZAC Day service at Empire Bay

The Empire Bay Progress Association (EBPA) will once again host an ANZAC Day commemoration on April 25.

Centred around the cenotaph in the centre of the village, the ceremony will begin at 11am and feature marching by the Malayan and Borneo Veterans Association, Empire Bay/Bensville RFS, participation by members of the Empire Bay Public and Coast Cristian Schools and members of The Bensville Sea Scouts.

Also in attendance will be representatives from various levels of government and NSW Police.

Local dignitary Tony Thorrington will be the MC on the day, Christie Chen will perform the national anthem, the bugle will be blown by Michael Hart and there will be an opportunity to lay wreaths at the cenotaph.

Following the service, a sausage sandwich sizzle will be hosted by the Empire Bay Fishing Club.

The EBPA is a community-based group of local people who volunteer their time and energy in an effort to enhance life and facilities in the Bay.

Its key role is to manage the community hall, but over the years the role has broadened to include lobbying on behalf of the community to improve facilities and roads, and representation to various levels of government concerning environmental, health and safety and community issues within the precinct of Empire Bay.

“Overall, we are proud of our achievements for a small community organisation dependent entirely on volunteers,” a spokesperson said.

The EBPA has responsibility for maintenance of the cenotaph and will be embarking on significant repairs to the war memorial later this year.

Any person interested in laying a wreath on behalf of a family member on April 25 should contact EBPA President Ken Shaw at empirebayprogress@gmail.com.
