Get rid of unwanted chemicals this March

A 20-litre or 20-kilogram maximum container size per item applies

Residents will have the chance to clear out unwanted hazardous chemicals from around their home and safely dispose of them for free at Central Coast Council Chemical CleanOut events this March.

Community members can drop off their chemicals between 9am and 3pm at Kincumber Waste Management Facility on Saturday and Sunday, March 4 and 5, and at Council’s Long Jetty Depot on Saturday and Sunday, March 11 and 12.

Council’s Unit Manager Waste and Resource Recovery Andrew Pearce said the regular events are a great way to dispose of hazardous materials safely, while also protecting the local environment.

“Dumping chemicals, placing them in the bin or pouring them down the drain is not only an offence that attracts fines and penalties, but can also cause serious impacts to our environment by contaminating our waterways and landfill sites,” earce said.

“I encourage locals to use this as an opportunity to declutter, clean and responsibly dispose of any unwanted, out-of-date or unused household chemicals that may be sitting in your home, garage or shed.

“Items such as pesticides, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, fluorescent globes and any unknown chemicals will be accepted for identification and disposal.”

It is important for residents to remember that only household quantities are accepted for disposal at the Chemical CleanOut events.

A 20-litre or 20-kilogram maximum container size per item applies, except for paints.

Residents can drop off up to 100L of paint, but they must be in containers of 20L or less.

Residents should handle chemicals safely and, if possible, keep all chemicals in their original containers.

This includes never mixing chemicals as dangerous reactions can occur.

Council Administrator Rik Hart said with continuous record-breaking numbers for the Chemical CleanOut events each year, it was clear that Central Coast residents are eager to do the right thing and keep hazardous materials out of landfill.
