Try out croquet at free open day

Croquet has been found to be good for general health and wellbeing

An open day will be held at EDSACC oval, The Entrance, on February 5 to give Coast residents a chance to try out the sport of croquet.

Hosted by Bateau Bay Croquet Club, the day will start at 9am and conclude at 12.30pm.

Timed to coincide with Seniors Week, the event will offer attendees the chance to learn the basics of golf croquet and enjoy a free sausage sizzle.

All they need to bring are flat soled shoes and a hat.

The day has been organised by the Toronto Croquet Hub, which incorporates 11 clubs over a wide area stretching north from The Entrance to Hawks Nest and encompassing Cessnock and Maitland.

Spokesperson Liz McDonald said the hub had received a government grant to promote croquet throughout the area.

“We have some excellent coaches, one of whom is on the state team, who will be there on the day and a morning tea will be provided,” she said.

“It will be a fun day where people can try out croquet.

“Those of us who are addicted find it is such a great sport as you get older.

“You are out in the open air, walking and meeting people and discovering new skills.

“It’s very good for one’s general health and wellbeing.”

McDonald said regular play is held by the bateau Bay club at EDSACC, which will provide free tuition, equipment and refreshments at the open day.
