Orange Sky needs volunteers

Orange Sky volunteer Christine Wheeler

Since May 2017, bright orange vans have been spotted all over the Central Coast, offering free laundry and shower services to people experiencing homelessness and anyone doing it tough.

And now Orange Sky is in need of more volunteers across the region.

Christine Wheeler of Avoca Beach started volunteering with the service when she moved to the region three years ago.

She had previously worked as a perioperative nurse in Sydney volunteering with the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.

She also volunteers with Interplast and Open Heart International where she travels to the Philippines and Nepal to support people whose physical appearance, as a result of burns and birth defects, means they are subjected to discrimination and isolation.

“When I first started volunteering, it really opened my eyes to how many people in our community were doing it tough,” she said.

Christine Wheeler loves helping in the community

“The Central Coast is such a beautiful part of the world, but like everywhere, there are always people struggling.

“I just feel really privileged to be able to help.”

Orange Sky has a simple formula; providing a platform for everyday Australians to connect through a regular laundry and shower service.

“The focus is on creating a safe, positive and supportive environment for people who are too often ignored or who feel disconnected from the community,” the website says.

“Our volunteers are not social workers or experts on homelessness – they are empathetic listeners and great conversationalists.”
