More than 5,000 attend Gosford Australia Day celebration

More than 5,000 people enjoyed live music, a variety of food options and a stunning firework display over the Brisbane Water at Central Coast Council’s free Australia Day event in Gosford on January 26.

Council Unit Manager Community and Culture Glenn Cannard said the day was a huge success, with the all-age inclusive family event held on Gosford waterfront and in the Leagues Club field offering a huge range of activities for everyone.

“There was definitely a real buzz during the afternoon, as this was the first major Council event in 2023 – so it was great time for the community to come together,” he said.

Cannard said the fine weather was a real bonus and, despite the storm in the evening, the fireworks were able to go ahead without any problem.

“Council was in touch with local authorities and the fireworks contractor throughout the afternoon and evening to monitor the storm-cell, given safety is always paramount,” he said.

“However, at the time of the fireworks, the storm cell was not significant nor within the minimum kilometre risk range.”

There was plenty of colour and activity

Australia Day also saw 120 people, from 36 countries, living on the Central Coast, become Australian citizens at a ceremony held at Central Coast Leagues Club in the morning.

Council Administrator Rik Hart said it was an absolute pleasure to preside over the ceremony, which is one of the highlights of his job.

“The Central Coast is a diverse region, and I felt honoured to be able to congratulate and welcome this group as newly appointed Australian Citizens – indeed, citizenship ceremonies are always a special occasion,” he said.

Hart said the other highlight of his day was hosting his first ‘pop-up’ meet and greet session with community members at the community event.

“I truly appreciated the many community members taking the time to have a chat, put forward their thoughts and views to me about Council and things happening on the Central Coast in general,” he said.

“Some of the hot topics were the revitalisation of Gosford’s waterfront and the community event itself.

“I’m planning a series of these pop-up sessions throughout 2023 and look forward to announcing the future dates.”

There was something for everyone at the family-friendly day

The Australia Day Community event was assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council.
