Matcham’s own Lain Carr is a part of the Australian Men’s Hockey 5’s Squad currently competing at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Games officially kicked off on October 6, with Carr and the rest of the squad out for glory, going into the fi rst day of competition as the defending champions. The team crushed Kenya in their first bout on October 8, with a 7-0 victory. Carr comes from a family of field hockey players, and has been in love with the game since he first picked up a hockey stick at age 10. Getting to the Youth Olympic Games was a whirlwind run for the 18-year-old, who impressed selectors at the Under 18’s Nationals in Tasmania, earlier this year.
The Games will surely be the cherry on top of a stellar year for the Gosford Hockey Club back, who’s made history for Gosford when he scored the winning shot for the club during the Hunter Coast Premier Hockey League Competition. Carr is also the only Coastie among Australia’s 88 athlete strong 2018 Youth Olympics team. The Men’s 5’s are expected to blitz their way through the remainder of the preliminary rounds before facing their fi rst major hurdle on October 12, when the quarter final matches get underway.
