On April 26, the newly developed Australian Taxation Office and NSW Finance Building, on the Gosford waterfront, was honoured with a Darkinjung name at its official opening.
Darkinjung is an Australian Aboriginal language, and the traditional language of the Darkinjung people. The chosen Darkinjung name is ‘Badhu’, meaning ‘ocean’ or ‘water’. This name was selected due to the traditional boundaries of Darkinjung land, extending from the Hawkesbury River in the South, up to Lake Macquarie in the north, across to Macdonald River and Wollombi, and up to Mount Yengo in the west, and extending to the Pacific Ocean in the east. The Chair of the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council performed an Acknowledgement of Country at the opening event. The ATO helps give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples a head start in their career with their Indigenous cadetship program. The program is a two or three year program that combines university study with practical ATO work placements and provides employment once the degree is completed.
