Member for the State Seat of Terrigal, Mr Adam Crouch, has encouraged his community to step up and support the participants who will shave, wax or colour their hair for the 2017 World’s Greatest Shave from Thursday, March 16 to Sunday, March 19.
“Our own community members will soon be participating by donating their hair for this very worthwhile cause,” Mr Crouch said.
“Their generous support will add to the more than $200 million raised across the country since the World’s Greatest Shave began almost 20 years ago,” he said.
The event raises funds for the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia, which uses the donations for research into leukaemia, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.
“Funds are also used to assist families affected by these cancers, by providing accommodation and transport during treatment,’ Mr Crouch said.
“It is such a good reason to dig deep and support people living with these serious illnesses and their families,” he said.
Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood cells that usually starts in the bone marrow.
Numbers have decreased in the past decade, but it accounts for almost 2.7 per cent of new cancer cases, and is the most common cancer in children under the age of 15.
