A Vogue dance workshop in Wyong and a Teen Dance at Umina Beach will round off the school holiday Rainbow Youth activities.
Naughty Noodle has organised the two fun, free and vibrant activities for LBGTIQA+ teens, their friends and families.
The Vogue dance workshop in Wyong will be held on Thursday, April 21, and the Teen Dance at Umina Beach will be on Friday, April 22, from 6pm to 10pm.
Creative director at Naughty Noodle, Glitta Supernova, said the Wyong event for 12-to-24-year-olds would feature one of Australia’s most infamous Vogue houses, House of Silky, in a workshop “guaranteed to bring out your superstar”.
“The most popular dance move on RuPauls Drag Race, the death drop Voguing was made popular by Madonna in the 1990s, who was inspired by the dance originally started by LGBTIQA+ communities of colour,” she said.
“We can think of no better host space to launch the dance workshops than Gudjagang Ngara li-dhi Aboriginal organisation whose mission is Listen to the Children.
“Ultimately, vogueing is about the freedom to express your truest self, to tell your story and perform any identity you want.
“The workshop will cover the essence of Ballroom Vogue, Vogueing foundations and multiple other categories including ‘runway’, and ‘face for a taste of ballroom’ as well as hosting a mini ball moment at the end.”
No experience or knowledge is required as this is the space to learn some moves.
All youth aged 12 to 24 are welcome but must be registered to participate: https://naughtynoodle.com.au/whats-on/vogue/
The Teen Dance at Umina PCYC is party time before going back to school for all 12-to-17-year-old Rainbow youth, mates, family and allies.
“The YAAS Party (Young, Authentic And Social) is where we can dress to express ourselves and spend the night celebrating with other beautiful rainbow youth and their friends, with DJ, shows, makeup booth, dancing and watching some shows,” Supernova said.
“Every teen is welcome here.
“We are a safe space for everyone and we will have free pizza and soft drinks, a pop-up makeup booth for party transformations, spaces to get changed into costume and just to chill out.”
The event is free but participants must register online at https://naughtynoodle.com.au/whats-on/yass/
Glitta Supernova said the Rainbow Youth Activities were a proud partnership with the State Government (Office for Regional Youth,) PCYC, headspace, GNL, the Community Hair Project and The Y.
“(It’s) a very grateful and excited alliance of families, teens, organisations and youth advocates who all are aware of the long-time gap on the Central Coast for rainbow teens,” she said.
“The state and local level support from non-government organisations, youth experts and connectors across the region highlights that not only how isolating the reality has been on the Coast for our LGBTIQA+ youth but also sets a new bar for a better time in which kids can all get together to make new friends, be their authentic self and start to shine.
“I remember the power of finally finding my ‘people’.
“There’s nothing better than finding community.
“It gave me a sense of belonging, of not being alone anymore and helped build my confidence and gave me a safe space to explore my identity and creativity without judgement.
“It’s like finding a logical family and those connections I made then were very special and followed me into adult life.”
