Member for Terrigal, Mr Adam Crouch, welcomed the government’s announcement to increase open spaces and inclusive playgrounds across NSW, following a $120m funding injection to improve local communities.
Premier, Ms Gladys Berejiklian, announced the NSW Government had committed $100m to secure strategic open green space, while also setting aside an extra $20m to build new and upgraded inclusive playgrounds. “Having access to green open space is a crucial ingredient in making communities thriving and enjoyable places to live,” Premier Berejiklian said. “We are committed to not only creating the jobs and infrastructure our communities need but also the vital open and green spaces so that families can have the best quality of life.” “We’ve heard the communities’ call to improve liveability and we are acting,” Premier Berejiklian said.
Mr Crouch said the $20m commitment towards building new or upgrading existing playgrounds would ensure that playspaces have the most engaging and inclusive equipment. Central Coast Councillor, Ms Rebecca Gale Collins, and Copacabana mother to a son with disability, Ms Briohny Kennedy, have also joined forces to advocate for upgrades to local playgrounds like Shaun Brinklow Park in Copacabana. Clr Gale Collins welcomed the state funding announcement. “Every child has the right to free play and a happy childhood. “Our children with a disability need all-inclusive playgrounds that are fenced, with suitable surfaces and all-inclusive play equipment, to enjoy a sense of freedom,” Clr Gale Collins said. “I look forward to working together with Adam Crouch, to deliver all-inclusive play spaces for our children.”
The $20m Everyone Can Play in NSW program will fund councils, by way of grants, to renew, renovate or build new playgrounds. Premier Berejiklian said state-wide guidelines for this program are currently being developed and will be released shortly. The grant program will provide opportunities for Councils to construct new or renovate existing inclusive play spaces across all of NSW. In collaboration with the Touched by Olivia Foundation, areas of high priority for new play spaces will be identified and delivery will be realised in partnership with local Councils.
