Round 5 of the Wyong Leagues Group Premier 1 competition delivered a blend of fierce defensive efforts, see-sawing battles and dominant second-half performances, as clubs now look toward the upcoming NSW Country Championships with momentum in hand.
Terrigal and the Razorbacks remain unbeaten after another strong round of results, but every fixture this weekend offered compelling storylines.
At Heazlett Park, Avoca Beach edged out Northlakes/The Bay 23-16 in what was a tightly contested, see-sawing battle.
The match ebbed and flowed as one side would edge ahead only for the other to immediately respond.
Both teams displayed structured play and gritty defence, but it was Avoca who held their nerve in the closing stages to secure their second victory of the season.
At The Haven, the home side were pushed to their limits in a defensive slugfest against Woy Woy, eventually running out 21-5 winners.
For the first 70 minutes, the scoreline was locked at 7-0, with Terrigal’s only breakthrough coming from an early try to Jayden Woolley.
A red card to Woy Woy for foul play changed the complexion of the game late, as Terrigal capitalised with a second try to Woolley and a late third to seal the win.
Despite the result, Woy Woy should be immensely proud of their effort, having stood toe-to-toe with one of the competition’s strongest outfits for most of the match.
At Woongarrah, Warnervale and Lake Macquarie were locked in a tense contest throughout the first half, with both teams struggling to break the deadlock as the half-time score remained in single digits.
It was Ratu Vero Suenisili who finally crossed for Lake Macquarie’s opening try, igniting their attack.
In the second half, Rameo Bainivalu scored twice, helping the visitors pull away and secure a convincing 37-3 victory, although the margin belied the competitive nature of the first 40 minutes.
Meanwhile, the Razorbacks flexed their attacking power, thrashing Gosford/Kariong 87-12 at home.
They were already in control by half-time, leading 33-7, with Robert Peden crossing for the opening two tries and setting the tone early.
The second half became a showcase of their attacking depth as they ran in a barrage of tries to remain undefeated alongside Terrigal heading into next weekend’s NSW Country Championship.
The Women’s Premier 1 Round 5 delivered a powerful display from the competition’s top sides, with Avoca Beach, Lake Macquarie and the Razorbacks all asserting their dominance in emphatic fashion.
Avoca Beach continued their blistering start to the season with a commanding 62-10 win over Northlakes/The Bay.
The result keeps them undefeated after five rounds, firmly establishing them as the team to beat in 2025.
Their structured play and attacking depth are proving too much for opponents to handle.
Lake Macquarie were equally impressive, putting 57 points past Warnervale in a one-sided contest.
Their physicality and speed around the park were key, as they overwhelmed their hosts in a clinical performance that cements their spot among the competition’s frontrunners.
The Razorbacks also lit up the scoreboard, running in 80 points against Gosford/Kariong.
With a blend of power and flair, they’re finding their rhythm and now look like genuine contenders as they hit their stride.
Terrigal also notched up a strong 34-0 shutout of Woy Woy, showcasing their defensive strength and discipline in a complete team performance.
Many players will represent the region at the NSW Country Championships in Tamworth next weekend.
With talent spread across multiple clubs, the Central Coast will be strongly represented, and the local competition is clearly producing players of representative quality.
