An investigation is underway following a serious multi-vehicle crash on the Hawkesbury River Bridge at Mooney Mooney during morning peak hour traffic on Thursday, May 8.
Brisbane Water Highway Patrol officers are appealing to the public for any information or dashcam footage involving the incident to assist in their investigation.
Emergency services were called to the M1 Pacific Motorway at about 7:10am on May 8 following reports of a multi-vehicle crash on the bridge crossing Hawkesbury River.
Officers attached to Brisbane Water Highway Patrol found at least five vehicles had crashed and were blocking three southbound lanes.
Most drivers escaped without injury or only minor injuries, but the driver of a truck – a 19-year-old man – was trapped in his vehicle and sustained serious leg injuries.
It took about two hours before the man was released from the truck by Fire and Rescue NSW crews and he was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted by Toll Rescue to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition.
All drivers underwent drug and alcohol testing; all returning negative results.
Southbound lanes of the M1 were closed for approximately 2.5 hours with lightweight traffic diverted to the old Pacific Hwy, but heavy trucks could not traverse that route and were parked up until the M1 was cleared.
A northbound lane was also closed on the M1 until it was completely reopened at 9.45am.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au
