Local arrest over hate crimes in Sydney

A Umina Beach man has been charged over alleged antisemitic graffiti and vehicles being damaged in Sydney’s east earlier this year.

In the early hours of Friday, January 17, police were called to Military Rd, Dover Heights following reports of antisemitic graffiti sprayed on two vehicles, paint splashed onto two houses and a car, and three vehicles set alight.

A crime scene was established, and investigations commenced under Strike Force Pearl.

Following extensive inquiries, police arrested a 25-year-old man at a home on West St, Umina Beach, at 6.30am on Monday, May 5.

He was taken to Gosford Police Station and charged with ‘participate criminal group, contribute criminal activity and destroy etc property in company, use fire etc value greater than $5000’.

The man was refused bail to appear at Gosford Local Court later that day, where he was granted conditional bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, May 29.

Police will allege that the man was not present at the time of the offence but had assisted in planning the incident.

Two men have already been charged over the same matter and are currently before the courts.

Investigations under Strike Force Pearl are continuing.

The NSW Police Force takes hate crimes seriously and encourages anyone who is the victim of a hate crime or witnesses a hate crime to report the matter to police through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or through Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.
