Woy Woy Little Theatre is set to raise the curtain on its latest production, Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution.
The courtroom drama first appeared as a short story by Christie in 1925 and was developed by her as a play in 1953.
It was brought to the big screen in 1957, with a star-studded cast headed by Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester and reimagined as a made for TV film in 1982 featuring Ralph Richardson, Deborah Kerr, Diana Rigg and Beau Bridges.
It has delighted theatre audiences for more than 70 years and stands the test of time as it follows the trial of Leonard Vole, arrested for the murder of Emily French, a wealthy older woman.
“Plays by Agatha Christie are always popular with Woy Woy Little Theatre cast members, creative teams and audiences because of the captivating characters and intriguing plots,” director Christine Vale said.
“WWLT’s production of Witness for the Prosecution is no exception.
“As the director, it has been a privilege and delight to work with this wonderful cast and crew.
“The cast has brought each and every character to life to keep audiences guessing and create the pieces of the puzzle that needs to be solved.
“Members of the talented creative team have combined to provide the atmosphere that encapsulates the tension both in and out of the courtroom to immerse audiences in the mystery.
“You are invited into the courtroom to be part of the jury that decides the fate of a young man accused of murder.
“You’ll hear the evidence from witnesses for the defense and the prosecution.
“Then, through the twists and turns of this evidence, you’ll be challenged to find the truth in this classic Agatha Christie thriller.”
Vale said the courtroom drama was Christie at her best.
“Duncan Piney as Sir Wilfred Robarts QC spearheads a cast of 13, with another spectacular set at the Peninsula Theatre,” Vale said.
Also in the cast are: Chad Davis, Troy Hester, Graham Vale, Mark Austin, Robert Stephen, Greg Buist, Kassie Brown, Jenna Arnold, Samara Dawson, Gordon Crawford, Dale Trueman and Bob Farmer.
The play opens on Friday, May 9, at Peninsula Theatre, with 10 performances over three weekends.
Tickets are available at www.woywoylt.com and bookings are essential.
