A man has been charged with arson after allegedly setting fire to trees in the popular Waterfront Park at Gosford straight after the 9 pm fireworks display on Tuesday, December 31.
The man was seen by eyewitnesses lighting the fire on the edge of the park where thousands of people with families had gathered to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
Many more thousands of people had streamed onto the waterfront roadways, which were closed to traffic after the Central Coast Mariners game had concluded.
The man in question was seen running from the scene after he was pointed out to police by onlookers.
A pursuit was initiated on foot and he was tackled a short time later by police and arrested.
We will publish updates as they come to hand.
