For the second year running, local community group Plastic Free Avoca Beach (PFAB) is providing temporary butt bins on the Avoca Beach foreshore in an effort to reduce cigarette butt litter in the town.
The bins will be in place from December 15 to the end of February, timed to coincide with the busy holiday season.
Members of PFAB will empty the bins of butts every few days and keep a tally of the number of butts placed in them as they do so.
Last Summer more than 500 butts were placed in PFAB’s bins.
“It’s clear that people are happy to use bins if they are provided,” a spokesperson said.
“After last year’s season we asked the Council to install proper butt bins at Avoca Beach but unfortunately they were not able to.
“We will ask them again after we tally this year’s collection of butts.”
Cigarette butts are the most littered item in NSW.
Despite their small size, these butts harbor a hidden menace – every cigarette butt contains non-biodegradable plastic.
This gets washed into the ocean where it adds to the volume of plastic waste in the environment.
Contrary to popular belief, cigarette butts never break down but instead accumulate in the environment, releasing harmful chemicals.
Plastic Free Avoca Beach would like to thank Mitre 10 in Kincumber for generously providing bins for the initiative.
