The Labor Party of NSW will not support the proposed reduction of councillor numbers on Central Coast Council to be presented as a referendum on September 14.
The referendum will be held in conjunction with the local government elections.
At its recent NSW State Conference held at Sydney Town Hall, delegates endorsed resolutions from Central Coast Labor Party branches supporting the status quo and retention of 15 councillors on Central Coast Council.
The referendum will ask Central Coast residents to either vote Yes or No to the following question: Do you favour a reduction in the number of Central Coast councillors from 15 to nine? This will result in three wards with each ward electing three councillors.
The referendum proposal was adopted by Council on May 11, 2021, at the initiative of then Council Administrator Dick Persson.
Member for The Entrance David Mehan said less representation would mean minimal effective outcomes for the community.
“Our community deserves better, and given our growing population, the reduction in councillors makes no logical sense,” he said.
