Sporting grounds close in wake of storm

Due to the intense weather and heavy rainfall, all Central Coast sporting fields were closed for use from 2pm Friday for the duration of the weekend of April 6 and 7.

Central Coast Council assesses each facility after rainfall and has the duty of care to close a facility if it is deemed dangerous to play on or if playing on the facility will cause damage to further prolong closures.

Local sporting associations have been notified of the closures.

A Council statement said they recognise that sporting associations are eager to play their respective sports however on this occasion, Council’s ground staff have recommended to close all sporting facilities for the weekend as the current ground conditions are unsuitable for community sport.

In a statement the Council said the decision was made in the interest of safeguarding players and preserving the longevity of the playing surfaces for the entirety of the winter sports season.

Ground staff have been unable to service some facilities this week due to the heavy rain and excessive flooding in areas and believe with the pending weather conditions Council cannot guarantee the safety of the fields.
