In a twist of fate that reads like a script from a football fairy tale, Central Coast Mariners’ midfield maestro, Josh Nisbet, has received his inaugural call-up to the Australian national team, the Socceroos, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.
Speaking from the international camp on Monday, Nisbet couldn’t hide his elation, describing the moment as a “dream come true.”
Initially overlooked in coach Graham Arnold’s selection for the upcoming matches against Lebanon, Nisbet’s fortunes took a dramatic turn over the weekend.
The twist came when Lewis Miller, a previously selected squad member, was sidelined due to an injury.
This unexpected development saw Nisbet, who was then on AFC Cup duties in India with his club, getting the nod for national duty — a revelation made by Mark Jackson during a team meeting that took everyone by surprise.
Reflecting on the sequence of events that led to his call-up, Nisbet shared the emotional rollercoaster he experienced.
“The night before, I was told I’d be a call-in option in case of injuries,” he said.
“It was a bit of a letdown when the initial squad was announced, and I saw the disappointment in my teammates’ eyes.”
However, the disappointment soon turned into jubilation with the news of his inclusion in the squad.
Having represented Australia at various youth levels, Nisbet’s senior team call-up has been a long time coming.
After a standout season with the Mariners, under the guidance of Jackson, this recognition is well-deserved.
“As an Australian, you dream of wearing the Socceroos jersey,” he said.
“While I haven’t had the chance to do that yet, I’m eagerly looking forward to this incredible opportunity.”
Nisbet’s contribution to the Mariners’ success this season has been nothing short of phenomenal.
Leading the A-League in assists with seven to his name, and adding two crucial goals in March against Newcastle Jets and Macarthur, he has been instrumental in propelling the Mariners to the apex of the league standings.
Josh Nisbet’s journey from hopeful youngster to Socceroos squad member is a testament to his hard work, resilience and undeniable talent.
As he prepares to potentially make his senior debut, both the local and Australian football community watches with bated breath, hoping that this is just the beginning of a long and illustrious international career for the Central Coast Mariners’ midfield dynamo.
