Special guest at the next meeting of the Australian Pants Society Central Coast will be Jennifer Wilder, who was instrumental in forming the community group Grow Urban Shade Trees (GUST).
“Jennifer’s passion to educate residents on the many benefits of urban shade trees encouraged her to seek out those in the local community who shared her concerns and vision, and in 2016 GUST was formed,” a plant society spokesperson said.
“Jennifer will be visiting our April meeting to share her experiences from joining these like-minded residents to lobbying local, state and federal governments for more urban greening.
“The objective is for GUST to eventually become obsolete as Central Coast Council begins to see the importance of investing in green infrastructure.
“Having taught for many years in hot remote areas, Jennifer anticipated living on the Woy Woy Peninsula would be so much more comfortable and cooler, but became increasingly concerned that the largely treeless streets and gardens were causing excessive heat.
“GUST is entirely volunteer-based and has planted over 900 leafy shade trees which provide many benefits, among which, are the cooling of the area and providing habitat and corridors for birds and wildlife.”
The plant society meeting will be held at 2pm on April 13 at Phillip House, 21 Old Mount Penang Rd, Kariong.
