Member for Robertson Gordon Reid has declared war on mould in Federal Parliament.
Reid called for improved regulations for businesses that remove mould and property remediation in a speech delivered in the Federation Chamber.
“Mould is an escalating issue affecting many property owners, rental tenants and housing tenants,” he said.
“A recent report has stated that in Australia, one quarter of households are impacted by mould.
“Mould can be hazardous to people living with underlying medical conditions including respiratory illnesses.
“Following a meeting with local Central Coast-based mould removal and remediation organisation, MouldSafe, I have learned that (removing) mould effectively requires proper equipment and processes.
“Unfortunately, we are witnessing too often businesses not using the appropriate equipment or undertaking the correct processes to remove mould and remediate properties.
“Consequently, we are seeing properties have mould removed temporarily, through poor processes, only to have it return faster and in a worse state.
“This situation calls for improved regulations so businesses undertaking mould removal can complete work adequately and effectively.”
Reid said he had made representations to the NSW Government on the matter and was awaiting a response on how government can provide quality control in this sector.
