In a critical effort to raise awareness about ocean safety, Umina Surf Life Saving Club will host a public demonstration on New Year’s Eve focused on understanding and navigating rips, the leading cause of coastal drownings.
Despite the danger, many beachgoers lack knowledge about identifying rips and how to react if caught in one.
This event aims to educate both locals and visitors, enhancing safety and awareness at the beach.
The demonstration at Umina Beach will be a timely and potentially lifesaving initiative, reflecting the local surf lifesaving association’s commitment to ocean safety.
Everyone is encouraged to attend this important event at 1.30pm to learn vital skills for a safer beach experience.
Lifesavers will be handing out educational flyers and provide rescue demonstrations and commentary.
The demonstration is part of a rolling series of public beach education demonstrations organised by Surf Lifesaving Central Coast and sponsored by local company Resinc Solar.

Should be a big fin added at the end of where the dye runs
Unfortunately the rip demo wasn’t as good as the one in the picture. A blob of dye was put into the rip and just kind of meandered away from the beach. It didn’t show how a rip will pull water sideways across the beach, and then out the back.
