Speaker of the House pops in to Woy Woy

Speaker Milton Dick and Member for Robertson Gordon Reid MP at Woy Woy Public School

Woy Woy Public School had a very special visitor recently when the Federal Speaker of the House of Representatives Milton Dick popped in, together with Member for Robertson Gordon Reid.

Dick was in the region to educate students about his role in the Australian Parliament and Australia’s system of government.

Reid said it was a special opportunity to welcome the Speaker to the region.

“Having the Speaker visit the Central Coast and pay a visit to the students and teachers at Woy Woy Public School was a fantastic experience,” he said.

“Speaker Dick provided an outstanding explanation of his role being in charge of proceedings in the House of Representatives, notably during Question Time.

“Students were also intrigued by the history of the Mace which is worth $20M and was donated to the Australian people by King George VI in 1951.

“Students got the opportunity to dress as the Speaker and several other parliamentary positions including the Serjeant-at-Arms (who is the custodian of the Mace).

“The Speaker was peppered with questions from interested students and there was even a controversial classroom vote on whether pineapple belongs on pizza.”

Reid said schools were encouraged to visit the Parliamentary Education Office for further information and resources about the Australian Parliament and the levels of government in Australia: Parliamentary Education Office: https://peo.gov.au/
