Lots of problems with proposed Kariong rezoning

letters 3Letters to the editor

Whilst it is acknowledged that the attempt to rezone land along Woy Woy Rd is just about the rezoning it is worth noting that there is little point in rezoning land that is not suitable for development.

Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council (DLALC) Chair Tina West points out that there have been reports on just this fact (Kariong development back in the spotlight, CCN 417).

However, reading the 12 reports which support this Gateway Project there appears to be serious faults in them.

The proposed development is not adjacent Kariong Village; it is adjacent large blocks of land, one of which has a stop work order from the State Environment Office.

There is no water pressure on the proposed block which will require the building of a large million dollar pump to service the blocks.

There are no cycleways and pavements connecting this proposal to the Kariong area and only last week Council stated that it had no intention of doing anything to remedy this in the near future.

The houses will, because of the infrastructure problems and the steepness of the area, have to sell to a premium, not as affordable homes.

The houses would be sold on an open market and thus there would be no controls on the animals which would escape into the adjacent park.

The final point that has to be made is the lack of concern by both State and Federal Members of Parliament for the Kariong area.

This is the entry point into the whole of the south of the Central Coast.

As such it would be nice to see it beautified and made welcoming to visitors to this area.

It is fast becoming a choking point because there is simply no planning or vision for the future.

The NSW Roads Department has given up (see the Penang Parklands reports) as has the Heritage Commission.

The strategic plans have constantly been attacked by developers and lack of funds to implement and the result for the future is dire.

  1. There are multiple issues surrounding the rezoning of the Kariong proposed development. Ignoring there are registered Aboriginal Sacred Sites on the this land along with endangered flora and fauna is not acceptable given the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council are also given the task of protecting cultural heritage and the land. I do not consent to this development proceeding.

The objection submissions are mounting farst since the opening.
This is not a Racist issue that some members of DLALC have been pushing. The General Public of the Central Coast including Triditional Bloodline Custodians of the Greater Central Coast are against this Rezoning from E2/C2 which is the highest zoning a area can be. The area that the rezoning encompases is covered in Sacred Sites and Carvings of the Traditional Custodians of the Greater Central Coast.
The Government and Central Coast Council must be reminded that this original Crown Land was given to the Land Council to protect and compensate for the wrongs that had occurred to the Original Custodians of the area. The DLALC is not a Mob but is made up of people from other Mobs outside of the area this Land Council Controlls.
Central Coast Council and ste State Government should be looking to give fair Compensation to Darkinjung Land Council being other land that is NOT Culturally Sensitive or Enviromentally Sensitive,or Monetary Compinsation and the land be placed into the NATIONAL PARK.

  3. There are many important reasons why this land is not suitable for development. The DLAC has other options.
