School zones back in force

School zones are back in force for Term 4

Central Coast motorists are reminded that school zones are once more back in place following the beginning of Term 4 on October 9.

Transport for NSW is reminding motorists to take extra care.

Deputy Secretary Safety Environment & Regulation, Sally Webb, said school zones are one of the safest places on our road network.

“We want to ensure we continue to keep it that way,” she said.

“Please slow down to no more than 40km/h unless a lower speed limit applies and help us keep our most precious people, our children, safe.

“Every school zone in NSW has at least one set of flashing lights to alert motorists when they are entering a school zone, as well as school zone signs and dragon’s teeth road markings – so there are no excuses not to be aware when you’re travelling through a school zone.”

Most school zones operate at 40km/h from 8am-9.30am and from 2.30pm-4pm, but there are a small number of non-standard school zones with different times and lower speed limits.

These school zones are identified by red/orange school zone signs.

Drivers should also look out for school children who are crossing the road or waiting to cross.

Lights flash on buses to warn motorists that buses are picking up and dropping off children.

By law, a driver must not overtake or pass a bus with flashing lights at more than 40km/h.

Higher fines and demerit points apply for certain offences committed in an active school zone, such as speeding, parking or stopping illegally, using a mobile phone illegally and illegal U-turns.
