Improving sewer services at Davistown, Tacoma and St Hubert’s Island

Council is installing above-ground pillars

Central Coast Water and Sewer has been refurbishing vacuum sewer systems at Davistown, Tacoma and St Hubert’s Island as part of Council’s commitment to maintaining quality water and sewer infrastructure across the region.

Vacuum sewer systems are an effective sewer management option for flat landscapes.

Instead of using gravity and pipes buried deep in the ground, the system uses vacuum pressure to transport wastewater through the sewer network.

Director of Water and Sewer Jamie Loader said the system was being refurbished to ensure it operated well into the future.

“In recent years the systems would have experienced an increase in reactive maintenance to fix individual issues, with some sections going offline following major weather events,” he said.

“We are replacing key components within the existing sewer pots, as well installing above ground pillars.

“Critical components will be relocated out of the sewer pot and into the pillar to ensure the systems function during major wet weather events.

“This solution will provide easy 24/7 access for maintenance and repair works when required and provides Council with an opportunity to improve how we manage our assets and more importantly provide an improved level of service to our customers.”

Council Administrator Rik Hart said every year water utilities removed thousands of sewerage system blockages caused by wipes and other rubbish.

“Flushing anything other than the three P’s (poo, pee and toilet paper) may result in a sewer overflow in your home or a blockage in our sewerage system,” he said.

“It is important that everyone does their bit in ensuring our sewerage network remains in tip-top shape, by being mindful of what we flush.”

Vacuum systems require maintenance and if anyone hears any hissing or gurgling noises coming from the system or strong odours they should report them via Council’s website.
