State award for college’s dance-story

Students perform The Tree of Hope

Green Point Christian College’s 2023 Wakakirri performance The Tree of Hope has received a state award, to be presented at an Awards Showcase on September 7.

The students have been invited to present their story-dance at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA).

This follows their performance at the 2023 Wakakirri Story-Dance Festival on August 14 at the Riverside Theatre at Parramatta.

Wakakirri is a nationwide initiative for Australian schools which provides a platform for students to express their thoughts, ideas and aspirations through the art of storytelling and dance.

Inspired by the belief that great stories can inspire change, Wakakirri is designed to promote student engagement and well-being in schools through the creation and performance of captivating story-dances.

Established in 1992, the Wakakirri Story-Dance Festival is Australia’s largest performing arts event for schools.

Green Point students from Years 4-6 presented a story of sacrifice and hope through dance, with their moving performance being awarded The Spirit of Wakakirri Award, which was the highest honour on the night.

College Principal Phillip Nash said the state award is a great credit to the many students involved, but especially to teachers Rebecca McKeown and Gemma Dobson for their “dedication and hard work to prepare the students to perform at such a high level and with such enjoyment”.
