New painting class at Ettalong Beach

The course will teach how to paint from a photo reference

Artist Shane Kilby will run a new painting course at Bay Gallery, home of Art Studios Co-operative, beginning on May 2.

Kilby will lead the class in painting surroundings from a photo reference and will examine the fundamentals of realism painting in oil or acrylic paint.

The course is designed for beginner to intermediate painters.

Kilby will guide a small group through the process of creating a realistic landscape, seascape or streetscape painting referenced from the Ettalong Beach area.

It will begin with searching out, choosing and photographing a reference.

Students will then learn how to paint that reference on to a canvas in oil paints or acrylic paints.

They will learn the fundamentals of composition, value, colour mixing and paint application.

Kilby said after completing the course students would feel confident and empowered to go out and create their own paintings of their surrounds or of any subject they choose.

“They will have the fundamentals and technical knowledge to proceed,” he said.

“This course will provide a solid base for any beginner to intermediate artist to produce their own realist paintings and continue to explore and experiment with style and treatment.”

Shane Kilby holds a Bachelor of Design – Illustration Major and has studied classical painting at Julian Ashton Art School.

The course will run over five consecutive Tuesdays from May 2-30 at the gallery, 29 Broken Bay Rd, Ettalong Beach, from 1pm to 3.30pm.
