Central Coast Mariners fans left the stadium happy with the 2 all draw. They knew they’d witnessed a high class and high intensity football match at Gosford’s Industree Group Stadium.
The Mariners always play hard against their very vocal cross-city rivals the Western Sydney Wanderers, Saturday night was no exception as the teams fought for the second spot on the A-league ladder.
Mariners coach Nick Montgomery was pleased with his playing squad saying “.. a massive effort from the players, we were unlucky not to get the three points at the end of the night.
“I was very proud of the team tonight with five or six academy boys I can’t be any more proud of the boys.
Goals to Sammy Silvera and Jason Cummings in the 30th and 73rd minutes respectively proved once again the scoring capacity of the Mariners team.
Numerous shots on target were also a testament to an assertive style of football that is increasingly popular with local fans, something reminiscent of the team that won the grand final in 2013 against the Wanderers.
The draw gave both the Mariners and the Wanderers one point a piece, enough to keep the local team in the second spot on the ISUZU-UTE A-League ladder, just two points ahead of the Wanders and the Pheonix on 21 points each. Melbourne City top the league ladder with 27 points.
The Mariners now look to next Saturday afternoon’s game against old rivals Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium in Sydney.
