Home barbecue goes wrong

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter arrives at Bateau Bay

A man has been hospitalised after a home barbecue went wrong at Berkeley Vale on January 9.

The 58-year-old was cooking steak on the rear patio of his Kingsford Smith Dr home just before 7pm.

When he turned up the gas on the 9kg LPG bottle, the hose detached, allowing gas to escape and ignite.

He suffered serious burns to his face and upper body.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews from Berkeley Vale and Wyong Fire Stations rushed to the scene along with the Rural Fire Service and NSW Police.

He was treated at the scene by the Westpac Rescue Service Critical Care paramedic and doctor and transported to the Royal North Shore Hospital Burns Unit in a stable condition.

The gas bottle was cooled and safely isolated.
