Coast goes down in nail-biting country cricket grand final

It was a thriller to the very end when Central Coast went down to Newcastle in the McDonald’s Male Country Championships Grand Final on December 11.

Central Coast finished their innings at 9/279 courtesy of a magnificent century from Wyong’s Callum Rainger and 49 from Harry Woodhead.

It was looking like a first Grand Final win to Central Coast, but the tide turned towards the end of the match, with Newcastle scoring 85 runs in the last eight overs, to win with three balls to spare.

Bowler Conner Haddow took four wickets for 54 off 10 overs but at the end of the day, it wasn’t to be.

Meanwhile, the Coast’s Youth Championships junior teams took on Lake Macquarie Attack on December 11.

The U13s were all out for 63 defeated by Lake Mac 1/67.

Ricky Preller impressed as top scorer with 17 off 38 balls, and best bowler was Joe Cameron 1 for 5 off 4 overs.

U14s had a win, bowling out Lake Mac for 84 and chasing it down 6/86.

Opening bowlers Sairam Patil and Matthew Shaw had a brilliant opening spell.

In the first 10 overs they had the opposition sweating with an extraordinary three wickets for four runs between them.

Patil was also the star batter – 33 not out off 70 balls, including 4 x 4s.

U15s had a loss, all out for 164, Lake Mac finishing 3/165.

Pick of the batters was Koby Smith 53 off 115 balls, 3 x 4s.

Harry Askey bowled 1 for 21 off six overs.
