The I Got Rhythm II jazz workshop will take place on Sunday, May 12, at Robert Knox Hall, Gosford. Following 2017 I Got Rhythm I workshop, the Jazz Trio of Mr Gavin Ahearn (piano), Ms Fiona Lugg (double bass) and Mr Toby Hall (drums), have put together another engaging workshop and concert.
This year’s workshop will delve into the concepts and rhythms at the heart of the jazz idiom, teaching through instructions, games and performances. The workshop offers a refresher on key elements learnt in the 2017 workshop, in particular, swing, and how it is created. The new elements offered this year are developing rhythmic skills and deepening understanding of jazz. “Expect lots of clapping games and hands on experiences with your instrument(s) using syncopation and swing phrases,” said workshop leader, Ms Lugg.
Workshop II will introduce the concept of polyrhythms. This will involve more clapping and play on instruments, using vamps and other rhythmic figures that will gradually become more complex. The I Got Rhythm II workshop and concert is presented by the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music with the support of the NSW State Government. Participants interested in registering for the workshop can download study sheets and exercises to practice prior to attending the workshop.
