PFLAG Central Coast, a peer led support group for Parents and Carers of LGBTQIA+ people, is relaunching in 2023 with a new team, providing support and information to families, carers and friends of all same sex attracted and gender variant people.

“Having one of your kids come out as sexually or gender diverse can be a scary time full of questions,” a spokesperson said.

“All parents want what’s best for their kids.

“But providing support isn’t always easy — especially if you are the parent or carer of a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ) child.

“In many ways no different from their peers, LGBTQIA+ youth face some unique challenges that parents often feel unprepared to tackle.”

PFLAG Central Coast wants to hear from parents and carers of LGBTQIA+ people on the Coastabout what they’re experiencing and what support they need.

“For many LGBTQIA+ youth, breaking the news to mum and dad is the scariest part of coming out,” the spokesperson said.

“You’re their anchor, and your acceptance is key.

“In fact, research shows that LGBTQIA+ adolescents who are supported by their families grow up to be happier and healthier adults.”

PFLAG will hold a Wine and Nibbles event at the ParkHouse in Kibble Park, Gosford, at 5.30-7.30pm on Thursday, February 2.

Attendees can mingle with other families of LGBTIQA+ people and meet the new Youth Worker and leader of the Young Authentic and Social program (YASS).

The event is free but you must register to attend at www.naughtynoodle.com.au/parkhouse.
