Emily shines at zone championships, broken wrist and all

Emily took first and third placings despite her broken wrist

A broken wrist couldn’t stop Gosford Little Athletics Club member Emily Munkman from competing at the recent Central Coast Zone Little Athletics Championships, where she came away with a first and third place despite her injury.

The Championships were held over two days, with Woy Woy, Terrigal, Gosford and Mingara competing and the best three from each event set to go on to the Regional Championships.

Emily’s love of running started last year after she was successful at the Central Coast Adventist School Athletics Carnivals.

She joined Gosford Little Athletics and The Team Turbo Distance Squad this year following success at the Hunter Regional Independent School Zone Championships where she won the 800m 10 Year Old Girls.

Gosford Little Athletics is one of the large clubs on the Central Coast with 360 members attending a weekly meet at Adcock Park, Gosford.

“We were looking for a squad that could develop Emily’s running and joining the squad has seen her get faster every week,” a spokesperson said.

“Emily has had a super season with the Gosford Little Athletics Club her first year.

“The Club is run by many volunteers and such a great interest for from five to teenage years.”

An accident at training on the hurdles last week saw Emily break her wrist, throwing doubt over her participation at the weekend’s Zone Championships.

“However, her resilience and will to be the best at this sport saw some outstanding results,” the spokesperson said.

Emily came third in the 1500m Under 11 Year Old Girls and then went on to the win the 800m Under 11 Year Old Girls race with a broken wrist.

She is hoping to train hard over the next few months ahead of the Regional Championships to be held on February 4-5.
