Tuggerah Lakes Police have noticed an increase in counterfeit $50 notes being used within the community.

They advise that when accepting a bank note, people should ensure that it is not counterfeit.

The Reserve Bank of Australia provides a number of resources to assist with identifying counterfeit notes.

How to check a banknote is real

Visit the Reserve Bank of Australia website and search ‘how to check a banknote is real’.

Police say it is an offence to knowingly possess counterfeit banknotes and if anyone suspects having a counterfeit note, they should hand it in to local police.

“You are well within your rights to refuse to accept a banknote if you hold concerns about it,” a police spokesperson said.
