Central Coast high-jump star Nicola Olyslagers has once again etched her name into the history books, clearing a remarkable 2.04m to set a new Oceania record and claim victory at the prestigious Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich.
The two-time world indoor champion was in brilliant form on Wednesday, sailing through her early heights with ease before nailing the record-setting jump on her first attempt.
The event, held at street level in front of a lively crowd at Zurich’s Opera House at at Sechseläutenplatz, offered not only Diamond Trophies and big prize money but also wild card entries to next year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Olyslagers faced stiff competition from Ukraine’s world record-holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who had taken the last three Diamond League titles and came in as the world leader.
Mahuchikh matched her previous world-leading height of 2.02m but was unable to clear 2.06m, settling for second place.
Great Britain’s Morgan Lake and Ukraine’s Yuliia Levchenko both managed 2.00m, with Lake’s jump setting a new national record and securing her third place on countback.
Speaking after her stunning performance, Olyslagers said the record had been a long time coming.
“I have been trying to get 2.04m for a few years now, and today I got the Diamond Trophy on top; what a day,” she said following the win.
“Today I had this peace inside of my heart, that something is going to change.”
The win caps off a dominant season for Olyslagers, further cementing her status as one of the world’s premier high jumpers and an athlete locals on the Coast can be proud to call their own.
