Poetry workshop at Yarramalong

Poetry workshop at Yarramalong

Poetry As Gift, a poetry workshop and lunch, will be held at the Angel Sussurri Restaurant and Manor House at Yarramalong on November 13 between 10am and 2pm.

Facilitator Karen Adler is a writer, artist, art therapist and a firm believer in the inherent healing qualities of the arts who says she has seen the delight that creativity brings to those who give themselves this gift.

Adler has just returned from a star-studded four months in New Zealand where she won the adult section of the inaugural Poetry Podcast competition run by Matamata-Piako libraries with her poem, The Skin of Flowers.

As a creative arts therapist and writer, she knows that learning to express yourself as clearly as possible is a great gift.

“Poetry is the artform that condenses experience down to its essence,” she said.

“It can be preventative medicine for new wounding, a healing poultice for an old wound.

“The Skin of Flowers, written way back in 2005 fits into the latter category, helping her gain a new, healthier perspective on an old love story.

“Artists learn to see the world differently than most.

“They learn that the arts save lives, and not just their own; that art can slice clean through isolation and the lie that we’re alone in the world.”
