As the Wyong community prepares for the inaugural Wyong Leagues Group Lakes Race on Saturday, 11 January 2025, it’s a fitting time to reflect on over 150 years of racing in the district.

What began as local gatherings at the Woodbury Inn 150 years ago has evolved into a significant regional sporting tradition, shaped by decades of change and community involvement.

In its early days, racing in Wyong was a modest affair, organised by local enthusiasts keen to test their horses’ abilities.

These informal events were about more than competition, they brought locals together, creating a sense of connection that would continue to define the region’s culture.

Over time, racing grew in scale and structure. Facilities improved, race formats became more formalised, and the Wyong Race Club emerged as a key player in supporting the sport’s development.

The club played a central role in uniting participants and spectators, helping to establish Wyong as a recognised venue for provincial racing.

Today, the Wyong track continues to host regular events, attracting talent and maintaining its status as an important part of the district’s sporting landscape.

The upcoming Wyong Leagues Group Lakes Race represents a new chapter in this long-running story, offering an opportunity to reflect on the region’s history while supporting the future of racing on the Central Coast.

Tickets for the event are available online, with more information on Wyong Race Club’s website.
